faxalter - alter parameters of a _H_y_l_a_F_A_X job queued for
transmission

_f_a_x_a_l_t_e_r changes the state of one or more _H_y_l_a_F_A_X jobs
that are queued for transmission. Numerous parameters can
be altered; see the options below.
An _i_d is a number that identifies a _j_o_b that has been sub
mitted to _H_y_l_a_F_A_X; these numbers are printed by _s_e_n_d_f_a_x(1)
when jobs are queued for transmission and can also be dis
played with _f_a_x_s_t_a_t(1). Unprivileged users can alter the
parameters of jobs that they own; clients with administra
tive privileges on a server can manipulate any job. By
default, _f_a_x_a_l_t_e_r contacts the facsimile server on the
host specified in the FFAAXXSSEERRVVEERR environment variable; but
consult the --hh option for more information.
OOPPTTIIOONNSS
--aa _t_i_m_e Specify a new time to send a job. The syntax
for specifying a time is the same as used by
_s_e_n_d_f_a_x(1) (and _a_t(1)).
--hh _h_o_s_t Force the server to be contacted on a specific
_h_o_s_t. The _h_o_s_t may be either a symbolic name or
a network address. If no --hh option is supplied,
_f_a_x_a_l_t_e_r uses the FAXSERVER environment variable
to identify the _H_y_l_a_F_A_X server to contact. If
this variable is not set, then _f_a_x_a_l_t_e_r checks
for a setting in the configuration files (first
in the per-user file and then in the system-wide
file). If all of the above fails, then _f_a_x_a_l_t_e_r
attempts to contact a server on the machine
where it is run.
--kk _t_i_m_e Specify a new time to kill a job; the syntax is
the same as used for the --aa option.
--mm _m_o_d_e_m Assign/reassign the jobs to the specified _m_o_d_e_m.
Specifying ``any'' for _m_o_d_e_m causes the jobs to
be scheduled for any available modem.
--pp The jobs should be _p_u_s_h_e_d; that is, they should
be sent immediately (this is equivalent to ``-a
now''.)
--PP _p_r_i Set the scheduling priority for the specified
jobs. The priority is an integer value in the
range 0-255; lower values give a job higher pri
ority. The default scheduling priority for a
job is 127 and priorities are recalculated after
each attempt to process a job.
--tt _t_r_i_e_s Set the maximum number of times the server
should call the remote fax machine.
--nn _s_c_h_e_m_e Select a notification scheme to use for the
specified jobs. Possible schemes are: ``_n_o_n_e''
for no notification (default), ``_w_h_e_n _d_o_n_e'' for
notification when the job is completed, ``_w_h_e_n
_r_e_q_u_e_u_e_d'' for notification when the job is
requeued after a failed transmission attempt.
The --QQ, --DD, and --RR options are shorthand for
these notification schemes, respectively. One
can also leave off ``_w_h_e_n'' when using the --nn
option; e.g., ``_d_o_n_e'' instead of ``_w_h_e_n _d_o_n_e''.
--vv Trace the protocol exchanges between _f_a_x_a_l_t_e_r
and the remote _h_f_a_x_d process. Tracing informa
tion is written to the standard output.

_f_a_x_a_l_t_e_r reads configuration information from the file
$${{LLIIBBDDAATTAA}}//hhyyllaa..ccoonnff and then from the file ~~//..hhyyllaarrcc.
Configuration files follow the conventions described in
_h_y_l_a_f_a_x_-_c_l_i_e_n_t(1). The following configuration parameters
are recognized:
TTaagg TTyyppee DDeeffaauulltt DDeessccrriippttiioonn
Host string localhost host to contact for service
Port integer 4559 port to use in contacting server
Protocol string tcp protocol to use in contacting server
Verbose boolean No whether or not to enable protocol tracing
The configuration parameters are explained below:
HHoosstt The host to contact for service. (Equivalent to
the --hh option.)
PPoorrtt The network port to contact for service.
(Eqvuialent to the --hh option.)
PPrroottooccooll The name of the communication protocol to use
when contacting a server. (Equivalent to the
FFAAXXSSEERRVVIICCEE environment variable.)
VVeerrbboossee Control protocol tracing. (Equivalent to the --vv
option.)

Setting a job's killtime without also setting the time to
send may cause the wrong value for the killtime to be
sent. This is because the killtime is calculated as the
difference in time between the killtime and time to send:
and if the time to send is not specified, then _f_a_x_a_l_t_e_r
uses the current time instead of querying the server for
the job's time to send.
_f_a_x_a_l_t_e_r suspends a job before attempting to alter its
state. If a job is active when a suspend request is made
there may be a delay while waiting for the job to enter a
consistent state where it can be suspended. If _f_a_x_a_l_t_e_r
is interrupted during this time then jobs may be left sus
pended.
_f_a_x_a_l_t_e_r only understands how to alter a subset of the
available job parameters; there are many more client-con
trollable parameters that can only be modified by communi
cating directly with the server using the underlying pro
tocol.
The continued use of the _a_t(1)-style notation for specify
ing times is questionable (it was done for backwards com
patibility).
